Freewrite on Lying

Friday, August 10th, 2007

ace-in-sleeve.jpgWelcome to another freewrite Friday. You likely know the drill.

Sit down with your writing tools of choice, and write about lying. This week I’m going to participate with a little free write of my own.

I got my start in storytelling with lies. When I was young, I told fantastic stories about myself, my family, and just about anything I could think of. I was amazed at the power I held when I began to talk of my fantastic adventures. At that age I didn’t understand the concept of deception, I only knew the complete high I got from creating a world for others and then taking them with me.

The other children believed I was pure Native American (I’m only a quarter, I think), that I used to live out west, that my dad was a famous baseball player, and much more. I lied about fantastic creatures living around the country house I grew up in. I lied about wanting to run away to my tribe, where I would be welcomed. I likely said I was a princess of the tribe too, but I can’t remember for sure.

I later learned what lies were in all there forms and about the concept of deception, and I began putting my stories where they belonged - on paper. It was no longer about convincing people my fantastic tales were true, it was merely about writing a good story and bringing people there to enjoy it as much as I enjoyed it in my head.

Then again, that’s what fiction writing is, isn’t it? One fantastic lie. One huge tale that never happened, but we’re interested in what it is and where it’s going anyway.

Thursday Thirteen

Thursday, August 9th, 2007

Confession time! In keeping with this week’s theme, I’m going to tell thirteen lies that I’ve told (or not told - lying by omission). Don’t think too badly of me. ;) They’re pretty much all from childhood.

1. My mother got me this oversized green-patterned dress with a green sweater and I said I loved it.
2. I also said I loved the hat…
3. …and the shoes.
4. Lying by omission is also lying - I never told my brothers that I snuck into their room almost every chance I could to play nintendo…
5. …and with their other toys.
6. I never told my (after) friend Penny that I stole her little toy in first grade.
7. I lied when I was young about being 100% Native American.
8. I lied when I said I went out with Tim because I liked him.
9. I didn’t really like Josh either. Hehe.
10. Or Chris.
11. I usually only ever went over to my cousin’s not because I liked them, but because I wanted to get out of the house.
12. I was the one who told my cousin Santa didn’t exist. (Yes, I’m terrible…)
13. I lied when I said I was just going to be at the library all day…

Lying

Tuesday, August 7th, 2007

ace-in-sleeve.jpgLies.

We’ve all told them and all have had them told to us. It could be something as innocent as telling a child a fairy will come take their tooth and leave a quarter, or it could be something as life-shattering as adultery.

This week’s prompt should be easy to write about given its universal experience. Write about a time you have lied, a time you have been lied to, or a lie you have observed happening. What happened? Did the truth come out? If so, what happened when it did?

If you would like to read a great post about lying and motherhood, go here on The Good, The Bad, and The Mischief. Thank you to Amanda for pointing me to it. I hadn’t even thought about lying from that standpoint.

Musical Mondays

Monday, August 6th, 2007

This week’s theme is going to once again tap into human nature, just in a closer scope than last week’s theme.

Lying.

People lie for so many reasons. Lies and covering up mistakes with lies are the main driving plot line for the majority of sitcoms these days. Someone screws up, lies about it, and spends the rest of the episode trying to cover up the lie.

However, there are plenty more reasons people people like than just to cover up mistakes…

Freewrite Friday

Friday, August 3rd, 2007
evil-clock.jpg

For this freewrite, you need a timer of some sort and your preferred writing tools.

Set your clock for five minutes, sit down, and write. Yep, that’s all you do. Write about whatever comes to your mind when you think/say the word “war”. It doesn’t have to be specifically about war - the mind can work in strange ways sometimes - and you shouldn’t try to censor yourself.

Sit. Write.

That’s all you need to do. :)

Famous Wars and Battles

Thursday, August 2nd, 2007

This week’s Thursday Thirteen depresses me a little, but I love history, so I also find it quite fascinating. War and fighting make up a huge chunk of our past. It’s interesting to go through and see what all of this fighting has done to make us the world we are today.

I encourage you to pick the war/battle on the list that you are least familiar with and do some research. You might find it interesting and even inspiring.

Thirteen Wars and Battles throughout History (not in chronological order)

*World War One
*World War Two
*War of 1812
*One Hundred Year War
*Battle of Hastings
*Civil War
*Revolutionary War
*Korean War
*Battle of Waterloo
*Cold War
*Gulf War
*Vietnam War
*French Revolution

Random Word Bank

Wednesday, August 1st, 2007

Happy first of August! August is one of my favorite months because, in my life, it’s filled with birthdays and good memories of the weeks before school starts.

As always with the word banks, you don’t have to write about war, you just have to incorporate all of the words. However, it might be easier if you did write about the week’s theme. Also remember you can make any of these plural.

Enjoy!
