Random Wordbank Wednesday

Wednesday, April 29th, 2009

cupcake.jpgHello once again everyone!

Welcome to another mid-week random word bank. I rather like random word banks. There is a challenge in them that not only gets your mind working, but you can also end up with a scene that you didn’t know you had it in you to write.

I hope you find these word banks useful. If there is a type of prompt you would prefer to see, please let me know.

Remember, with all the words, you can use any form, any tense of the word. Eg. Laugh can be laugh, laughter, laughs, laughed.

For the first word bank, I don’t want you to write a short story or anything actually. What I want you to do is word association. For every word there, I want you to write the word and then write the first word that comes to your mind after.

For the second word bank, I do want you to write a short story (or something longer if you like) that incorporates this week’s theme. This round goes as usual; just include all of the words in the bank.

For the third word bank, it is something different yet again. I would like you to try your hand at writing a poem incorporating the words provided. (Don’t worry if you can’t quite use all the words; eight or nine is great!)

Enjoy!

Contemplating Weather

Tuesday, April 28th, 2009

hot-australian-sun-500I know, I know. Contemplating weather?

Trust me…

When I was… oh, young. I can’t remember how old I was, really. When I was younger than I am now and still living with my parents, my brother and I were at home. The other brother was… somewhere. My father came home early with a coworker because it was raining at their work site.

They hadn’t but stepped into the house for a minute when we heard the wind, looked outside and saw the spinning cyclones right outside the windows and rushed into the basement. Twin tornadoes went around our house for what seemed like ages.

The house took minimal damage, but we lost all the sheds. And our laundry - including knickers - flew across half the county.

For about a year after that, whenever the wind started blowing hard, I didn’t feel safe until I was in the basement. Scary stuff…

What is your favourite kind of weather? Why? What kinds of things do different weather patterns make you feel? Have you ever been caught in dangerous weather? Has weather ever scared you?

Remember, to help clear your mind before you start writing, take a few deep breaths. Focus on the sound of the air entering and leaving your lungs. Let the noises and worries of the day fade for a few moments while you focus only on breathing.

After you are calm, think about your experiences and start writing.

Wishing you heaps of creativity, a generous muse and heaps of time to write. Feel free to check in here with your progress for the day/week/month/etc.

Musical Monday - Men at Work

Monday, April 27th, 2009

youtubeNo, that doesn’t mean Write Anyway is under construction…

I know I have kind of featured these guys on a previous Musical Monday, but I didn’t feature the group, so that’s my excuse for listening to their music videos again!

Men at Work!

I have many fond memories of riding the bus home from school (hard to believe it was that long ago) and smiling whenever this came on the radio. (Maybe it was a sign from the future about my husband. *cue strange music*)

Anyway…

Enjoy the music and the rest of your week!

Land Down Under

Oh, come on. You had to know that I was going to put up this video…

Who Can It Be Now

Believe it or not, for a long time I didn’t connect this song to Men at Work. You think it would be a given with Colin Hay’s voice…

I Can See it in Your Eyes (Live)

And there you have it! Your musical inspiration for the week.

There are a lot more songs out there, so do some hunting! I hope you find this music inspirational.

If you have any suggestions for singers or bands you’d like to see featured, let me know in the comments. I won’t promise to put all selections up, but I do promise to take a look. Besides, I’m always open to falling in love with a new band or singer and adding more music to my massive collection.

Have an excellent week filled with inspiration, time to write and a very generous muse.

Lend a Helping Hand and Win

Saturday, April 25th, 2009

chicken-soup-campus-chroniclesHello everyone!

I’ve decided to hold a contest that will be a good thing for everyone. I don’t feel right just asking for help without offering something in return, so I figured a contest would be the perfect way to do things.

I write for a site called The Bloggers Guide, writing articles all about my beloved Melbourne and surrounds. Currently, they have a contest running for the six regional winners from around the world. (I’m standing for Australasia.)

I’m hoping to not only win the grand prize but to also have at least some of my entries become popular enough to be published in The Bloggers Guide to Melbourne book. I very much need your help.

What You Can Win

Like I said, I don’t feel quite right asking for your help and giving nothing in return. What I’m offering you is… drumroll… a copy of Chicken Soup for the Soul: Campus Chronicles. (The one in the picture.)

Why this book? This recently published book just so happens to have a nonfiction story about a horror roommate of mine tucked in its pages.

I’m giving away three copies. If more than ten people enter, I will increase the number of copies to give away to five.

If you’re not keen on this book, just let me know and we’ll work something else out.

Winners of this (my) contest will be announced May 3rd.

How to Win

I very much hope you’ll go in and vote to help me, as it doesn’t take a lot of time and you don’t have to sign up to do so. However, there is no way to keep track of who voted. Because of that…

All you have to do is put up one post. Easy peasy. Just let your readers know what’s going on and that I’m looking for a little help from my friends (I’m going to get that song stuck in my head now). Put up a post with a little blurb, the links to where they can vote, and how they can also go in for a chance to win. (They must come back here to leave a link to their post to be entered.)

Where to Vote:

Go here: http://www.thebloggersguide.com/wbc and give five stars to The New Australian.

Go here: http://www.thebloggersguide.com/melbourne/the-new-australian and rate me at five stars again.

Lastly, go here: http://www.thebloggersguide.com/blogs/jmsilver That’s a list of all my blog entries. You can click on the “+” signs next to each entry.

Voting goes until May 1st, so be sure to check in often and cheer on The New Australian.

As always, thank you for your kindness and support.

Contemplating Karma

Tuesday, April 21st, 2009

full-moonEven as a child, I was moved by the ‘Golden Rule’: Treat others as you would like to be treated.

Though certain religions would like to claim the Golden Rule as their own, the truth of the matter is that there is scarcely a religion or belief system out there that doesn’t have some version of the Golden Rule incorporated into it.

It only makes sense that such a rule is very important to achieving harmony in humanity, then, isn’t it?

The concept of Karma, put simply, is that your actions in this life will influence your incarnation in the next life. If you are mean and cruel in this life, you might just incarnate into a maggot the next life.

That’s putting it very simply, but Karma in Hinduism and Buddhism isn’t quite what I want to talk about. Instead of one life to the next, I believe in single lifetime Karma. What goes around comes around. That sort of thing.

I have always been very sensitive to the way things work in my life. When I have been rotten, rotten things have happened to me. When I have been kind, I have had kindness (sometimes the exact same kindness) come back to me when I needed it.

Some may argue that I was looking for those events, so they happened. However, I assure you that the belief came from experience, not the experience from belief.

Do you believe in a Karmic world system? Do you believe in some form of the Golden Rule? Have you ever experienced anything you would consider to be Karmic?

Remember, to help clear your mind before you start writing, take a few deep breaths. Focus on the sound of the air entering and leaving your lungs. Let the noises and worries of the day fade for a few moments while you focus only on breathing.

After you are calm, think about your experiences and start writing.

Wishing you heaps of creativity, a generous muse and heaps of time to write. Feel free to check in here with your progress for the day/week/month/etc.

Musical Monday - 3 Doors Down

Monday, April 20th, 2009

youtubeHello and welcome to another Musical Monday here on Write Anyway!

This week I am introducing one of my more ‘vintage’ groups. They aren’t really vintage by any means, but I have been listening to (and enjoying) their music for a long time. 3 Doors Down

According to their official website: “Formed in Escatawpa, Mississippi, the resilient fivesome has blazed a trail as the quintessential rock band, attaining massive mainstream success but somehow never losing that small town identity that has branded them rock’s truest underdogs. They’ve reigned as a genuine force of nature, boasting rock n’ roll’s most earnest work ethic – ‘The thoroughly modern American band’ - crows Billboard, one part swagger/one part tireless road warriors, brandishing an arsenal of battle-tested radio gems like their breakthrough anthem, “Kryptonite.” Unleashed at the beginning of the decade, the song seemed to capture the band’s heroic climb and steadfast refusal to be pigeonholed as just another rock band.”

Enjoy!

Let Me Go (Live - Acoustic)

Behind Those Eyes

If I Could Be Like That

And there you have it! Your musical inspiration for the week.

There are a lot more songs out there, so do some hunting! I hope you find this music inspirational.

If you have any suggestions for singers or bands you’d like to see featured, let me know in the comments. I won’t promise to put all selections up, but I do promise to take a look. Besides, I’m always open to falling in love with a new band or singer and adding more music to my massive collection.

Contemplating Compassion

Tuesday, April 14th, 2009

heart.jpgCompassion is defined as:

“the humane quality of understanding the suffering of others and wanting to do something about it” - WordNet Search

Described as more powerful than even empathy, compassion makes you not only commiserate with someone else but want to do whatever you can to make the situation better.

Though it seems somewhat like bragging to say so, I am a compassionate person. Whenever I see someone having a tough time, I want to make it better. I’m compassionate to a point that I have to stop myself and think about things because some people get uncomfortable with compassion.

At the end of the day, though, I am most satisfied when I have done something to make at least one other person’s life easier.

Are you a compassionate person? Do you think about your compassionate acts or just do them? Has anyone ever called you compassionate? Do you know compassionate people? Do you know any stories of compassion that have moved you? Do you make an effort to be compassionate? Does effort take away some of the goodness of compassion or is it the act that counts?

Remember, to help clear your mind before you start writing, take a few deep breaths. Focus on the sound of the air entering and leaving your lungs. Let the noises and worries of the day fade for a few moments while you focus only on breathing.

After you are calm, think about your experiences and start writing.

Musical Monday - Meatloaf!

Monday, April 13th, 2009

youtubeHello and welcome to another Musical Monday here on Write Anyway!

As you may have guessed, I’m feeling a bit perky this week, so I decided to have a bit of fun. I want to start this week off with a bit of rock and roll, a bit of weird, a bit of…

Meatloaf

What I think is the best part about Meatloaf is that his voice (which, admittedly, hasn’t changed a whole lot) has only gotten better over the years. These videos are more recent, but it’s very easy to find his older stuff on YouTube.

I am disappointed, though, because try as I might, I just could not find the Eddie scene from Rocky Horror Picture Show. And here I was looking forward to enjoying that again… So it goes!

Enjoy!

It’s All Coming Back To Me Now (With Marion Raven)

Couldn’t Have Said it Better

A Kiss is a Terrible Thing to Waste

And there you have it! Your musical inspiration for the week.

There are a lot more songs out there, so do some hunting! I hope you find this music inspirational.

If you have any suggestions for singers or bands you’d like to see featured, let me know in the comments. I won’t promise to put all selections up, but I do promise to take a look. Besides, I’m always open to falling in love with a new band or singer and adding more music to my massive collection.
