Musical Monday - Breaking Benjamin

Monday, June 29th, 2009

youtubeHello and welcome to another Musical Monday.

This week I am turning it down a notch in the peppy department (a department I hang around in way too much) because writing - and life - is not all happy and sunshine.

The videos I am featuring this week will help you tap into the darker places in your mind. Anger, rage, fear, tears, regrets… All of these themes are present in Breaking Benjamin’s videos, music, lyrics, etc. If you need to get into a darker place for your writing, then Breaking Benjamin is a good place to get started.

That being said, the last video - Rain - isn’t quite as ‘dark’ as it is a sad melody. Rain is the first Breaking Benjamin song I ever heard and is one of the songs I listened to repeatedly during some bad times in my life a few years ago. It’s definitely good for getting into the less pleasant parts of your mind for writing, so I wanted to include it.

Enjoy.

And there you have it! Your musical inspiration for the week.

There are a lot more songs out there, so do some hunting! I hope you find this music inspirational.

If you have any suggestions for singers or bands you’d like to see featured, let me know in the comments. I won’t promise to put all selections up, but I do promise to take a look. Besides, I’m always open to falling in love with a new band or singer and adding more music to my massive collection.

Have an excellent week filled with inspiration, time to write and a very generous muse.

Musical Monday - Journey

Monday, June 22nd, 2009

youtubeIf there was ever a song that I would love to have the nerve (and the singing voice) to sing in public, it would have to be ‘Open Arms’. I have been well and truly in love with that song since I was a young girl.

Ah, dreams are lovely things, aren’t they?

This is another random pick from my music player on shuffle, but it is a very happy random pick. Journey hasn’t been a big part of my life, but there are definitely songs I can remember hearing at specific points in my life that will always stand out to me. Especially with the songs I am featuring today.

I’m not going to put up a biography or anything like that because I’m sure most, if not all, of you know plenty about Journey already. To all the ‘true blues’, I did include one song with the ‘new guy’, so forgive me for that.

Enjoy the music.

Musical Monday - Fall Out Boy

Monday, June 15th, 2009

youtubeMonday, Monday, Monday!

Can you tell I am feeling a bit bouncy today? And on a Monday, too. I must be coming down with some weird illness to be so cheerful on a Monday of all days.

As always, it is my wonderful pleasure to present you with your musical inspiration for the week:

Fall Out Boy

I started to listen to Fall Out Boy when I was still at university, but they have become even more popular since then. Many of their songs have become top hits on Australian charts. Like with quite a bit of the bands, groups, etc I follow, I can’t remember how or what got me into Fall Out Boy.

But, I am pretty sure it all started with a song called Mr. Brightside…

Enjoy the music!

I Don’t Care

Try to ignore all the weird bubbles popping up in the video.

Musical Monday - Mike Batt

Monday, June 8th, 2009

youtubeHello everyone! I hope you all had a wonderful weekend!

Today I have the pleasure of featuring an artist my husband gets to take the credit for introducing me to. We have plenty of his CDs, which are absolute musts on the road trips the husband and I go on.

Mike Batt

Until my husband - then boyfriend - sent me ‘Lady of the Dawn’ as a present, I had never heard of Mike Batt. Apparently, though, I was one of the few people who hadn’t heard of him. Mike Batt is one of Britain’s most well known singer, composer, songwriters. His amazing career includes many CDs, many pairing ups with other artists, movie sound tracks and heaps more.

Enjoy the music! I definitely know I will.

Musical Monday - Nickelback

Monday, June 1st, 2009

youtubeMmmm. Sexy voice…

Oh! Sorry. I was just listening to some of the songs for this week’s Musical Monday and got a little distracted… Sorry about that.

This week I am very pleased to feature the talented:

Nickelback

I honestly don’t remember who or what song got me paying attention to Nickelback, but I have been listening to their music (and enjoying it!) for quite a long time now. Somehow I even managed to get one of their CDs.

I picked a couple videos for Nickelback as well as a couple videos of Santana featuring Chad Kroeger. I’m a fan of Santana’s music as well and I just love the songs featuring Chad, so I figure it won’t be a big deal to throw them into to the mix

I hope you enjoy the music!

Musical Monday - Natasha Bedingfield

Monday, May 25th, 2009

youtubeI so was not ready for the weekend to end. Were you? Then again, my readers in the US get to enjoy a long holiday weekend, so they’re not complaining. The Queen’s Birthday holiday is coming up in a couple weeks, so I can hold out until then for a long weekend.

Enough of that! It’s time to get into this week’s Musical Monday so you can have your musical inspiration for the week.

I have my dear friend in Canada to thank for my introduction to this week’s spotlighted artist:

Natasha Bedingfield

Hawke first sent me Wild Horses, and I have been enjoying Natasha’s music ever since - even thought I don’t hear a heck of a lot of it here in Australia. I have put up some of my favourites from her array of songs for your listening pleasure.

These aren’t the greatest videos, but Musical Monday is about the music - not the videos - so it’s all good.

Enjoy!

Musical Monday - TV Show Introductions

Monday, May 18th, 2009

youtubeAnother Monday, another crazy week about to start, another Musical Monday.

Have to love it.

I decided that I wanted to switch things up a bit by putting up a few videos of music of a different kind… Nearly all of us watch television at some point - even if it is just the news or five minutes of something or other when you’re passing by.

I’m putting television show themes as an inspiration for this week because those shows have writers, and those writers need inspiration, too. It’s good to be reminded every now and then that there are writers working in a wide variety of roles in many different industries.

Enjoy!

Scrubs Introductions

I have been watching this show way too much lately and couldn’t resist putting it in here.

How I Met Your Mother Intro

Very short and sweet, but I like it.

Paranormal State

This is actually the first part of an episode because I couldn’t find just the introduction.

Musical Monday - Enya

Monday, May 11th, 2009

youtubeIt’s Monday again already? That just doesn’t seem possible. Ack.

That’s what you get when you are behind on your work.

A new week means a new focus for your Musical Monday inspiration. With another spin of my iTunes put on random, it is my pleasure to introduce some music from a woman I am sure you have already heard of.

Enya

I know that Enya and Enya listeners occasionally get a bit of crap from other people, but I suppose that’s just life. For me, there is a relaxing quality to some of Enya’s music that is greatly appreciated in the mostly hectic, stressed out, crazy ball I call my life. If someone wants to give me crap for appreciating relaxing music, well, it’s hardly going to make me angry…

I’m not going to feature all relaxing songs, so have a listen and may it inspire you to create wonderful things…

Enjoy!

Only If

The Memory of Trees

On Your Shore

And there you have it! Your musical inspiration for the week.

There are a lot more songs out there, so do some hunting! I hope you find this music inspirational.

Musical Monday - Stage Musicals

Monday, May 4th, 2009

youtubeGood day all!

A new Monday, a new month…

I love May. There are a couple reasons why, but mostly it’s because May is when I get to celebrate my wedding anniversary (5th). There is nothing like a celebration of love to make a month lovely.

I have no idea who or what got me into musicals, but I have been a fan of them since childhood. From the classics to more modern plays, I just can’t get enough of them. Heck, perhaps they helped inspire me to join the theatre group back in school.

Not all these videos are from the stage performances, but they are from stage musicals.

Enjoy!

Light My Candle - RENT

Defying Gravity - Wicked

*Idina Menzel (the Wicked Witch) had the flu during the Tony Awards. Just in case anyone was fussy about the way she is breathing.

The Internet is for Porn - Avenue Q - WOW Version (the only one I could find with decent audio)

Not appropriate for all readers.

Musical Monday - Men at Work

Monday, April 27th, 2009

youtubeNo, that doesn’t mean Write Anyway is under construction…

I know I have kind of featured these guys on a previous Musical Monday, but I didn’t feature the group, so that’s my excuse for listening to their music videos again!

Men at Work!

I have many fond memories of riding the bus home from school (hard to believe it was that long ago) and smiling whenever this came on the radio. (Maybe it was a sign from the future about my husband. *cue strange music*)

Anyway…

Enjoy the music and the rest of your week!

Land Down Under

Oh, come on. You had to know that I was going to put up this video…

Who Can It Be Now

Believe it or not, for a long time I didn’t connect this song to Men at Work. You think it would be a given with Colin Hay’s voice…

I Can See it in Your Eyes (Live)

And there you have it! Your musical inspiration for the week.

There are a lot more songs out there, so do some hunting! I hope you find this music inspirational.

Musical Monday - 3 Doors Down

Monday, April 20th, 2009

youtubeHello and welcome to another Musical Monday here on Write Anyway!

This week I am introducing one of my more ‘vintage’ groups. They aren’t really vintage by any means, but I have been listening to (and enjoying) their music for a long time. 3 Doors Down

According to their official website: “Formed in Escatawpa, Mississippi, the resilient fivesome has blazed a trail as the quintessential rock band, attaining massive mainstream success but somehow never losing that small town identity that has branded them rock’s truest underdogs. They’ve reigned as a genuine force of nature, boasting rock n’ roll’s most earnest work ethic – ‘The thoroughly modern American band’ - crows Billboard, one part swagger/one part tireless road warriors, brandishing an arsenal of battle-tested radio gems like their breakthrough anthem, “Kryptonite.” Unleashed at the beginning of the decade, the song seemed to capture the band’s heroic climb and steadfast refusal to be pigeonholed as just another rock band.”

Enjoy!

Let Me Go (Live - Acoustic)

Behind Those Eyes

If I Could Be Like That

And there you have it! Your musical inspiration for the week.

There are a lot more songs out there, so do some hunting! I hope you find this music inspirational.

Musical Monday - Meatloaf!

Monday, April 13th, 2009

youtubeHello and welcome to another Musical Monday here on Write Anyway!

As you may have guessed, I’m feeling a bit perky this week, so I decided to have a bit of fun. I want to start this week off with a bit of rock and roll, a bit of weird, a bit of…

Meatloaf

What I think is the best part about Meatloaf is that his voice (which, admittedly, hasn’t changed a whole lot) has only gotten better over the years. These videos are more recent, but it’s very easy to find his older stuff on YouTube.

I am disappointed, though, because try as I might, I just could not find the Eddie scene from Rocky Horror Picture Show. And here I was looking forward to enjoying that again… So it goes!

Enjoy!

It’s All Coming Back To Me Now (With Marion Raven)

Musical Monday - Five for Fighting

Monday, April 6th, 2009

youtubeHello everyone! Welcome back to Write Anyway for Musical Monday.

Well, I don’t know about you, but my weekend definitely didn’t go as planned. Between mystery pains and heaps of rain, it was a lot easier to just go with the flow and enjoy than to try to fight against the current.

But that’s okay. I did enjoy myself and I even got a fair bit of writing done on my novel. Woo hoo!

Today it’s my pleasure to introduce to you a group that you likely already know… but their music reminds me so much of ‘going with the flow’ and one of their songs is the absolute perfect song to write to for another story I have on the back burner.

Here’s to Five for Fighting.

My eldest brother inadvertently introduced me to Five for Fighting. He was selling one of their CDs at our family garage sale and I bought it from him. Yet another one of my very lucky buys…

Enjoy the sweet music…

Musical Monday - Classical Music

Monday, March 30th, 2009

youtubeHello and welcome to Musical Monday!

Today I have decided to do something just a little different. Instead of featuring just one singer or group, I’m going to feature a category: classical music.

Classical music may be considered ’stuffy’ but many, but to me, it can be inspirational, passionate, and very enjoyable. Today I’ll feature a few of my favourite pieces. Feel free to let me know some of your classical favourites in the comments.

Enjoy…

Arabian Dance - The Nutcracker - Tchaikovsky

According to the video description, “Production of the Ballet Company of the Mariinsky Theater in St Petersburg.” The Arabian Dance has long been at the top of my favourites for classical music. There is something mysterious and exotic about the music.

Carol of the Bells - As Performed by Celtic Woman

While it’s not technically my favourite, I decided to go with the Celtic Woman performance because the ladies have wonderful voices.

Greensleeves

You’re going to think I’m missing Christmas, but I promise I’m not. I simply love the music.

Piano Concerto No. 2 Allegro, Opus 102

“Hans Christian Andersen’s fairy tale “The Steadfast Tin Soldier”.
Composer of Music: Dmitri Shostakovich
Presented by Bette Midler in Disney’s Fantasia 2000.”

Musical Monday - The Fray

Monday, March 23rd, 2009

youtubeAnother Monday, another musical group to pay tribute to!

I discovered The Fray not long after I moved to Australia. They quickly became a regular addition to my mp3 player as a pleasurable group to listen to as well as an inspiration for my creative writing.

According to wikipedia: “The Fray is a Grammy Award-nominated four-piece piano rock band. Formed in 2002 by schoolmates Isaac Slade and Joe King, the Greeley-based group released their debut album How to Save a Life in 2005. The band is best known for the song “How to Save a Life”, which charted in the top three of the Billboard Hot 100 and was also a top 5 single in Canada, Australia, Ireland, Sweden, and the United Kingdom. The Fray also found national success with the song “Over My Head (Cable Car)”, which became a top ten hit in the United States and Canada. How to Save a Life was certified double platinum by the RIAA and was also certified platinum in Australia and New Zealand.”

You can check out their official website here.

Enjoy the music.
