Thirteen Writing Prompts

1. Write your life story in six words.
2. Set a timer for one minute and start writing. No preparation, no thinking about what you’re going to write.
3. “You put that back this instant!”
4. Get together with a friend and create some word prompts for each other.
5. Join (or create) a writer’s group for people in your area. Talking with other writers is a great way to find inspiration.
6. “Do you have the time?”
7. Imagine being denied something not necessary to your survival but something (or someone) you wouldn’t want to live without.
8. Write a poem for your best friend about your best friend.
9. “I need a drink.”
10. Go to an antique shop and find an object to write a story about.
11. “Something weird is going on here.”
12. Create the most annoying hero you can think of.
13. “Pour the champagne!”

Thirteen Writing Prompts

1. Go somewhere you have never gone before and write there.
2. Play along with Velvet Verbosity’s 100 Words Challenge.
3. “They say you can’t do much with a rubber band, but I reckon they’re wrong.”
4. Go to a public place - train station, cafe, etc - and people watch for a while. That should provide you with some great inspiration.
5. Find some videos of comedians on YouTube (or other video sites) and use them as inspiration to write a humor piece about your life.
6. You have been granted the ability to stop and start time at will…
7. “Even when I’m not, my love will always be here with you.”
8. What one choice, if you had chosen differen
9. If your life were a specific genre book, what genre would it be? What would be the title?
10. Try meditating and clearing your mind for ten minutes before you start writing.
11. Use a lyric from your favourite song as the first line of dialogue in a story.
12. Do you have a pet or wish you had a pet? Write on that.
13. What advice would you give to someone struggling with writer’s block?

1. If you tend to write in one genre - humor, crime, fantasy, romance - try combining your usual genre with a genre you’ve never written in before. You never know what you might get.
2. “I guess you could call me the queen of misfortune.”
3. Think of a time in your life when you felt like no one understood you.
4. A gun goes off at a crowded party.
5. “We’re not just a family company, we’re a whole world company.”
6. You get the news that if you don’t make some changes in your life, you are going to die…
7. “You’re right; I should be happy. But I’m not.”
8. Write a story based on something you hear/see/read in the news.
9. “I’m sorry I can’t be happy about your sister marrying my father.”
10. You are involved in a terrible accident and lose one of your five senses.
11. You can have everything you ever wanted in life, but someone you love has to die for it…
12. Start writing a biography. Start with notes about important parts of your life and move on to filling in the gaps.
13. “What does that have to do with me?”

1. Think of a time in your life that you needed to do something you truly didn’t want to do.
2. Try some free flow writing. Set a timer for five or more minutes and just see where your mind takes you.
3. Write a poem about your day.
4. Write a 100 word story on trust.
5. “Where have you been!”
6. Someone hands you a pill, promising you that your life will improve in all ways if you take it. Do you take it?
7. Think of something you’ve always wanted. Write about getting it.

Thirteen Writing Prompts

1. Listen to your favourite mix tape, CD, music video, etc and see where the music takes you…
2. “The pulse is beating so strongly.”
3. Go through some poetry books and find one that inspires you to write a short story.
4. Watch a ‘behind the scenes’ feature for something (anything) and use that to help inspire some free writing.
5. Write a scene with one character and then rewrite that scene with two (or more characters).
6. “I really have no idea what to tell you.”
7. Remember a time in your life when you were extremely tired but had to keep going anyway…
8. Find some of your parent’s music or look up the music from the year you were born. Who knows what might inspire you…
9. “Bloody good!”
10. Think of a time in your life when you were extremely relieved…
11. Put yourself in the shoes of someone who does/deals with something you have never dealt with. Write about your ‘experiences’.
12. “Well you have an overactive imagination because there just isn’t any.”
13. Go somewhere different today and let the new surroundings inspire you.

Hello and welcome to another Thursday Thirteen that’s not on Thursday. This week I have decided to do something a little different and will be giving you thirteen writing prompts every day until the actual Thursday Thirteen comes around.

Thirteen Writing Prompts

1. Listen to your favourite song and change the lyrics to give it a new meaning.
2. Create a character who works in an occupation you know nothing about. Have fun researching!
3. “Move me. Make me feel something.”
4. Pick one thing you need to survive – food, water, oxygen – and then create a world where you live without it. How do you survive? What substitutes?
5. “What happened? How did we get here? Where is here?”
6. What is your biggest pet peeve? Why? How exactly does it make you feel?
7. What is your favourite childhood memory? How old were you? Why is it your favourite memory?
8. “It’s beautiful. Indescribably beautiful.”
9. Without looking, pick a random CD/tape out of your collection and write a story using the song titles.
10. Find a picture of a landscape you’ve never been to and write a scene with people at that place.
11. You have just received a letter in the mail that has no return address…
12. “Where do you go when you stare off into space like that?”
13. Start keeping a dream journal and use those dreams for writing inspiration.

No, no, it’s alright. You haven’t suddenly lost half a week. It is Monday. However, I have decided to do something a little different this week.

I’m declaring a Thursday Thirteen week.

I am rather fond of Thursdays, so what better way to have a great week than to pretend every day is Thursday? Thus, every day this week (except Friday) I will be putting up thirteen prompts for your prompt writing pleasure.

Thirteen Writing Prompts

1. “I think I’ve said too much.”
2. Write a story using the letters of your name. Each new paragraph much start with a word starting with the corresponding letter.
3. “And so it goes.”
4. Invent a new drink. What does it taste like? Is it hot or cold? How do you make it? Alcoholic? Juice?
5. “The nights are endless around here.”
6. Create your version of hell. What does it look like? Feel like? What makes it hell?
7. Create your version of heaven. What makes it heaven?
8. “Same shit. Different day.”
9. Describe your favourite food without ever telling what the food actually is. See if people know what you’re talking about.
10. You meet a man at a café who tells you this is the first day he’s spoken in twenty years. What’s his story?
11. “Oh, you’ll never believe it! I can hardly believe it myself.”
12. Do some research on poetry and write a poem in a style you’ve never written in before.
13. “It’s easier to believe that the dark wins.”
