Friday Free Write

Hello and welcome to Friday! I love Fridays.
Today I have something for you to do that should be a lot of fun. I did the same thing (well, not exactly – I had to actually make and decorate it) back in my sociology class when I was seventeen. It was a project that was hard to complete, but I had a lot of fun doing it and am glad I saved it and have it to look at today. Hopefully you will enjoy creating yours as much as I did mine.
Today I would like you to think about some of the events in your life and create a time line. You can do what I did for the assignment and actually create a time line, or you can open a word document and type everything. Choose whichever method you like best.
Some things to put on your time line:
*Your earliest memory/memories
*Your favourite elementary/primary school teacher
*Your elementary/primary school friends
*Your first love
*First CD/cassette tape/eight track/record
*Happiest time thus far
*Saddest time thus far
*Biggest disappointment thus far
*Three favourite life memories
*Three favourite school memories
*Where you’ll be in five years
*Where you’ll be in ten years
*How you want people to remember you
There were plenty of other things I had to put on my timeline, so feel free to ask for more ideas if you need them. I have my time line right next to me on the desk at the moment, so it’s an easy reference. Also feel free to go above and beyond the things I’ve listed.

This reminds me of a similar exercise that this writing teacher does at a local college where I used to work. He told me hebegins class with students making a line with ) on one side and 70 on the other. Then he tells them to make a list of their most important goals in life under it. After the goals are made, he says tat 70 represents the average age people live to, and then they muse make where they are on the timeline, given this average age at death.
He said it’s a really powerful representation of where you are in life versus how many goals you’ve acheived. I believe it!

ugh so much for hurrying! ZERO is on one side, 70 on the other. Sorry, in a rush!

No worries.
It is a good tool, I think, for things even beyond a writing exercise. It’s good to sit down and take in where you have been so far in life and also where you want to go.
